Brassica oleracea

The most Incredible summer cabbage that we know of! First introduced to the U.S. in the 1920s and by 1950 was the most popular garden variety of summer cabbage. The most delicious cabbage you will ever try— your family or market customers will be begging you for more! It is also extremely quick to mature. We have seeded into trays on May 1st, planted in June, and harvested cabbage by July 4th. The early maturity allows you to plant a fall crop once the cabbage has been harvested, thus maximizing garden space. Cabbages are from 3-5 lbs and very disease resistant. Their compact size allows for closer spacing and more plants in the row, further maximizing your garden space. This is not a winter storage cabbage variety. However, it will store for at least 3 weeks int the refrigerator.

Growing Instructions:

Can be started indoors from early to late spring for a summer crop or anytime until mid July for a fall crop. Direct seed anytime from mid spring through mid July. Plant out transplants from mid-spring onwards.

Space plants 12" apart.

Space rows 20" to 24" apart.

Cabbage is a heavy feeder so provide Plenty of compost. We also recommend a fall cover crop of peas or another annual legume to fix nitrogen for the upcoming spring planting. Mulch with leaves, or whatever you have available, to hold moisture and suppress weeds. Make sure soil pH is between 5.8 and 7.0. If plant needs a growing boost, water with nitrogen tea or compost tea a few times. If trace minerals are inadequate, sprinkle a small amount of woodash or azomite in each planting hole.

Harvest Instructions:

Harvest anytime the plants have headed. They will keep sizing up the longer they are in the field but they top out at around 5 lbs, or about 8 inches across.
