Lactuca sativa

Concept Lettuce is a cross between crisphead and romaine lettuce. It is very heat tolerant and bolt resistant yet it maintains a mild flavor and crisp juiciness even in mid summer. Our photos displayed here were taken late July, a truly tricky time for lettuce in New England because of the heat and humidity. Concept is equally as resilient in cold, wet weather and is one of the standout fall varieties from our 2021 fall lettuce trials. It is cold hardy to around 15 degrees F if grown under cover. Out in a wet and windy fall conditions, 25 degrees F will be its lower limit. This is one impressive lettuce and one of our favorites.

Growing Instructions:

Can be sown any time of season. For early lettuce heads sow indoors in trays in early April to transplant out in early May. For fall heads sow mid July through early August.

For full sized heads: Space plants 12" apart, space rows 12" apart

For baby lettuce: Space plants 2" apart, space rows 6” apart.

Compost and a legume cover crop are all the fertility lettuce will need. Soil pH should be between 5.8 and 6.8.

Harvest Instructions:

Can be harvested as cut and come again or as whole heads.
