Phaseolus vulgaris

A most intriguing family heirloom from Wise County, Virginia dating back to at least the 1930s. Burgundy swirls on cream. Textured, plump, round, almost pea-shaped bean. Extraordinarily high yielding and vigorous pole bean. Unmatched flavor, rich, nutty, and creamy when cooked. One of our absolute favorites for overnight beans on the wood stove.

Growing instructions:

Direct seed after last frost.

Space seeds 4” apart in rows 36” to 48” apart.

Pole beans need a trellis or tall plants like corn and sunflower to climb on. Beans fix their own nitrogen so fertilizer should not be too rich or there will be too much foliage at the expense of pods. A well-balanced, well-cured compost and a sprinkle of wood-ash should be adequate. Make sure soil pH is between 5.8 and 7.0.

Harvest Instructions:

When pods have dried down hand harvest from plants. Put on a tarp and thresh under foot. Winnow with screens, fans and/or wind. Store in air tight jar in a cool dry place.
