Pisum sativum

Sugar Snap was bred by Dr. Calvin Lamborn when a rogue thickly walled pea pod was discovered during during a snow pea breeding project. This tightly podded pea was parsed out and selected for super sweet and juicy out of hand eating quality and introduced in 1979 as a new class of pod pea altogether, the snap pea! Anticipate vigorous 6 ft vines by building a nice and sturdy trellis. Sugar Snap is our favorite garden snack and we know you will enjoy this summer classic and the very first snap pea of its kind!

Growing Instruction:

Direct sow peas six weeks before last frost.

Space seeds 2” to 3” apart. To get the most out of a trellis, we recommend planting peas in a double row style.

Space the 2 rows 12” apart with the trellis going right down the middle.

Peas are a legume thus fix their own nitrogen so fertilizer should not be too rich or there will be too much foliage at the expense of pods. A well-balanced, well-cured compost and a sprinkle of wood-ash should be adequate. Make sure soil pH is between 5.8 and 6.9.
