Codonopsis pilosula

A beautiful flowering perennial, also called Dangshen, used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Sweet tasting roots are harvested and used for its myriad of healing properties, particularly known as an immune tonic and as a more widely available and gentler option to the traditional (Panax) ginseng. Easy to grow and fun to watch as its carefree twisting vines climb high. Flower buds emerge as little green balloons that burst into mesmerizing and magical bell shaped flowers. A lovely option for an arched trellis. Harvest roots in the autumn of its fourth year (at least). Aerial parts and fine vines will die back in the winter months. Hardy to zone 4.

Sowing & Growing Information Coming Soon!

Germination of these seeds are light dependent (photoblastic). When sowing, gently press down the soil to create a shallow indent, sprinkle seeds and lightly cover with soil. Do not bury too deep and be sure to keep the surface of your trays moist as you await your seeds to germinate. When watering, use the mist setting on a sprayer hose to gently moisten without too much pressure. Using a spray bottle with water is also a good idea. Heavy water pressure may push the surface sown seeds out of the trays!
