Citrullus lanatus
A classic for northern gardens! Blacktail Mountain is an early maturing and high yielding red fleshed watermelon with a superb crisp texture and sweet flavor. Introduced in 1983 by Sand Hill Preservation Center’s founder Glenn Drowns. Downs meticulously selected this watermelon while living in Idaho where summer nights coud dip into the low 40s F. An early yielding watermelon such as Blacktail is also suitable for hot and humid climates and can be paired with longer season melons for an early start in the harvest. The more melons the merrier, as we always say! Can be picked just underripe and ripened in storage for up to two months!
