Avena strigosa

Hertiage landrace grain also called Bristle Oats, Shetland Oats, Coirce Beag (Irish), and Ceirch Du (Welsh). The main oat species grown in Wales, Scotland and Ireland until the 17th century for animal and human consumption. Thrives in marginal soils of rocky, acidic and salt-sprayed northern coasts. Black Oats were nearly lost due to their incompatitbilty with industrialized farming practices but thanks to a small network of farmers and seed savers in the UK and Ireland, stocks of regional landraces have been recovered. The gorgeous golden-green straw of Black Oats are used for traditional basketmaking, strawbacked chairs and thatched roofing. Quick to mature and ready to harvest in just 10 weeks after sowing. For consumption, the tight hulls must be removed.
